Help Me Please PMP Staff Are Evil

Help Me Please PMP Staff Are Evil
An anonymous note found in a make-up advent calendar ordered from amazon.co.uk, posted on facebook and reported in the Daily Mirror, Sun and other UK newspaper websites.
Photograph of note reproduced above.

It’s the beginning of December. Christmas is coming. A British dad has ordered an Advent Calendar for his 13 year-old daughter from Amazon. It was supposed to come with a ‘love, dad’ note from him. But it came with a note from someone else too. Written by hand on the gift invoice, it said ‘Help me please PMP staff are evil’. PMP is an employment agency that Amazon uses to source temporary warehouse staff, especially at peak times of year like the lead-up to Christmas. April, the daughter, found it and showed it to her Mum, Kim. They had no idea who PMP were. But Kim posted it on facebook, tagging amazon, asking for an explanation. Amazon replied quite quickly, but so did her facebook friends. Then the story of the note reached the newspapers, it became a festive news feature. The Daily Mirror story was linked to a recent exposé by its journalists of appalling pay and working conditions at Amazon warehouses. This note linked what might otherwise be a distant story to the lives of consumers on the receiving end of the company’s cheap and conveniently-delivered goods. While there was some discussion on twitter, it was the comments section on the Daily Mail story where the discussion rapidly took shape. Was this a fake story? 15 minutes of fame for April and/or Kim? Made up by the journalists for some festive clicks? Should she have posted it online when the information on that invoice could easily have identified the writer? Could they have been sacked? Was Amazon warehouse work really that bad? Yes, according to the Daily Mirror exposé, and according to the commenters who seemed to have some experience of working in these places too. What impacts did this story have? If any? ‘It’s’Help Me Please PMP Staff Are Evil’ is one of many real and fake messages sent – accidentally and deliberately – by workers to consumers, showing them what work and life has gone into making their things, and sometimes asking for help. Click ‘message from worker‘ above to see the collection. Each one works out differently, so what happens as a result of this one being sent, received and made public? Keep reading!

A mum says her teenage daughter discovered a ‘help me’ note hidden inside an Amazon Christmas delivery. Kim Dorsett said April, 13, found the words scrawled onto an invoice inside a £30 make-up advent calendar ordered by her dad Philip. The note said: ‘Help me please, PMP staff are evil.’ PMP is the recruitment agency used by Amazon to fill jobs at its distribution sites (Source: Selby & Taylor 2017, np link).

When [April] looked at the note she asked what it meant and I thought maybe it was the delivery driver having a joke, but the the invoice was inside the package (Source: Kim Dorsett in Saul 2017, np link).

Kim, 32, confronted Amazon with a picture of the note on Facebook (Source: Keay 2017, np link).

My 13 year old daughter received her advent calendar today from her dad. She was all excited to open it because it was addressed to her. She found this [note] inside of her box and is worried amazon running sweatshops …… I’ve told her it’s probably a prank but can you just confirm this amazon (Source: Dorsett posting on facebook, in Keay 2017, np link).

Replying within an hour of her post yesterday an Amazon spokesman replied: ‘Oh no! I am so sorry your daughter received this note in her package, Kim. W’d like for our team to look into this for you. Please fill out this form …. at your earliest convenience. Thank you’ (Source: Keay 2017, np link).

They didn’t answer my question 😲 (Source: Dorsett on facebook, in Keay 2017, np link).

She has also emailed the online retailer and PMP, which recruits for and works with Amazon, but has yet had no reply (Source: Saul 2017, np link).

She added: ‘This is quite worrying. It’s the sort of thing you hear about happening in sweatshops in China’  (Source: Keay 2017, np link).

‘You wouldn’t expect something like that to happen in the UK. You don’t like to think there is someone working in sweat shop. It’s shocking’ (Source: Dorsett in Saul 2017, np link).

‘I thought ‘this isn’t right’. Then I thought it must be a prank and I was overreacting, but then people pointed out all the stories about Amazon lately’ (Source: Dorsett in Selby & Taylor 2017, np link).

My other half ordered the calender as a present. He ordered a note in it saying ‘love from mum and dad’. We asked April ‘have you read the note?’ and she said ‘do you mean this one?’ (Source: Dorsett in Selby & Taylor 2017, np link).

[My daughter] wants to be an animal rights lawyer when she’s older and wants to be able to help someone if they are in terrible condition (Source: Dorsett in Saul 2017, np link).

A statement from PMP about the note given to the newspaper said: ‘PMP Recruitment employs over 100,000 people across a range of clients, many of whom have stayed with us for a number of years or return each year during our peak trading period, so we do not recognise the comment made as being an accurate or fair representation of the employee experience we provide. ‘We provide various channels to raise concerns, including a confidential helpline, and have not received any complaints of this nature. ‘We do, however, take such comments extremely seriously and will be investigating in conjunction with our client.’ Cordant Group PLC, who own PMP recruitment, has a statement saying the company adheres to the Modern Slavery Act 2015 on its website homepage (Source: Keay 2017, np link).

A spokesman for PMP said they had not received any complaints ‘of this nature’. They added: ‘We do however take such comments extremely seriously’ (Source: Saul 2017, np link).

PMP said the note is not ‘an accurate or fair representation’ of the experiences of the people it recruits, but is investigating the incident alongside Amazon (Source: Selby & Taylor 2017, np link).

Inspiration / Technique / Process / Methodology

This isn’t an unusual story. Messages like this are one of the most direct ways to bring trade justice issues into spaces and acts of consumption. Whether by activists or factory workers, whether by accident or by design, whether genuine or fake, this form of commodity activism is called ‘shop dropping’ (or sometimes ‘droplifting’). It’s the opposite of shoplifting. It adds extra surprise to giving and receiving presents. It’s a treasure hunt for everyone to enjoy (Source: Cook et al 2017, np link).

Last month, Zara customers found messages attached to their purchases that Turkish garment workers had not been paid for their work, nor did they receive any severance when their factory abruptly shut down. Zara’s parent company subsequently started a fund for the affected workers (Source: Anon nd, np link).

PMP is a temporary employment agency in the U.K. that Amazon uses to meet its needs for large numbers of relatively low-wage staff in its massive warehouses, especially during the peak holiday season. ‘I thought it must be a prank and I was overreacting, but then people pointed out all the stories about Amazon lately’ said April’s mother Kim in an interview (Source: Anon nd, np link).

The finding [of this ‘help me’ note] comes one week after an investigation by Sunday Mirror exposed deplorable working conditions inside a huge Amazon warehouse in Tilbury, Essex. The probe found employees were falling asleep on their feet, due to exhaustion from unachievable workloads. Packers at the warehouse worked up to 55 hours per week at a wage of £8.20 per hour. A package must be packed and ready every 30 seconds, and employees are rewarded a small bonus for preparing 120 packages in an hour, according to Sunday Mirror. Employees also told investigators their toilet breaks were monitored and they were not allowed to leave the building except on scheduled breaks (Source: Daily Sabah 2017, np link).

Bone-weary workers reportedly have just nine seconds to process a package during the long-hours at the online store warehouse, with a Mirror investigation claiming employees are suffering panic attacks as they struggle to keep up with demand (Source: Stroud 2017, np).

Amazon refuted the claims, stating they were ‘inconsistent with [the experience of] the many thousand we employ all over Britain’ (Source: Daily Sabah 2017, np link).

This is something that I find far more concerning than what some z-list, fish-faced, self-obsessed plank is currently sleeping with – that is not news. The state of Amazons INTERNATIONAL warehouses, and the nistreatment of their staff, is actual news believe it or not (Source: Left Has Lost It 2017, np link).

Maybe in Manchester it’s simple to go find a another job right before Christmas, but a lot of people who work 50 hours a week packing boxes in warehouses do it because they don’t have a lot of other options. Moreover, it does appear that Amazon has been violating labour laws (Source: ChetMC 2017, np link).

Simple answer, stop shopping with Amazon and get rid of these employment agencies (Source: reader 2017, np link).

Why are people STILL buying from Amazon (Source: Keith. W 2017, np link)?

PMP are a terrible agency to work for. They supply temp staff at my workplace, for the first 3 months they don’t get paid overtime at an enhanced rate, so they’re encouraged to do lots of [overtime] … Also they’re n a reduced rate for the first 3 months. Very few staff are retained after the first 3 months, they just get new starters again, and those that remain rarely get any [overtime] allocated (Source: Burton1976 2017, np link).

I’m surprised the Unions haven’t taken the opportunity to send in an organiser to see if these employees want to join a union which is their right (Source: snowy 2017, np link).

People often say that unions are bad, but without them employees can be abused and made to work in impossibly bad conditions. The EU sets minimum standards on working conditions, but of course even these will go once we out. Outcomes / Impacts

Since posting the message on Facebook [Kim Dorsett] has also received messages both supporting her story and some accusing her of making it up. [She] adds: ‘It doesn’t bother me if people think it’s fake, I don’t have time to make up stuff like this and did not even know who PMP were until we got the note. I just hope no one gets in trouble or sacked for writing the note if it is true’ (Source: Saul 2017, np link).
