“Find Your Doppelganger<\/strong>“
A concept for a mobile phone app submitted by Rachel Grant as part of a BA Geography dissertation at the University of Exeter, UK.

Student Rachel Grant likes to try out the latest apps on her smartphone. She’s tried ones that tell you which celebrity you look like. That’s OK. But there’s a photographer who finds unrelated people who look exactly<\/em> alike. The technical terms is doppelganger. He arranges for them to meet, photographs them together and finds they feel connected, like lost relations. So what if there was a phone app – like the ones that help you find your celebrity lookalike – that could scan your face and introduce you to your supply chain doppelganger? A garment worker? A tungsten miner? A tea picker? A delivry driver? A plastic recycler? Someone who helped to make your stuff? Might you feel more empathetic towards supply chain workers if they looked like you? Would it be easier to imagine walking in their shoes? What if the ‘Find Your Doppelganger’ app gave you the chance to chat? What if you met up? What impact could meeting a lost ‘relation’ like this have on you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are sat on a bench, waiting for a train. It\u2019s delayed. Typical. You hate waiting. You reach into your jeans pocket to pull out your smartphone. You hate it when your hands aren\u2019t occupied. You prefer to have a reason not to talk to the other people on the platform. Look busy. It\u2019s less awkward. Your jeans are tight so you wriggle as you slide out your phone. No new texts. You scroll through your facebook newsfeed. An instagram of a pretty salad captioned \u2018lunchtime! #yummy! @thekitchen\u2019. Emma\u2019s dyed her hair again. \u2018mysterious black cherry\u2019. Another instagram, this one of your friend\u2019s not-so-new baby. 32 likes and a hundred variations of \u201cthey grow so fast!\u201d in the comment box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You swipe your fingers over the screen to return to your home screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still another 4 minutes before your train arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You check out the new apps. This one looks good- \u201cfindyourdoppelganger\u201d. You wonder what celebrity it\u2019s going to tell you you look like. What the hell, it\u2019s only 99p.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes up on your screen. It looks pretty flash. It instructs you to take a photo of yourself. You line it up with the grid, eyes on the horizontal line, nose in line with the vertical. God you look tired. Never mind. You keep your expression neutral, like in a passport photo, like it told you. You press capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Khuh-tsch!*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes a picture in black and white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bar of light scans across the photo, making a sound like a light sabre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*jiummmmmmmmmmm*<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The special effects are pretty cool. As the bar crosses your face, you see a grid of lights, the structure of your face momentarily illuminated. You feel like an MI5 agent, using your biodata to enter into some top secret location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Searching the database\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wait is over. A face pops up on the screen. Your face again. No! not your face? Jesus Christ. Have they morphed your face or is it.. no it is another person. This is not what you were expecting. You don\u2019t look like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp. You look like\u2026 \u201cFred Ndungya\u201d, apparently. Who IS this person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s as if they are looking right at you. They, too, must have taken a picture of themselves, looking straight into the lens, straight-faced, like it were a passport photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You wait for something to happen. A message appears on the screen, silently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFred Ndungya is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He works 60 hours a week in a dangerous mine, threatened at gunpoint, to extract the mineral Cobalt. The same mineral that is used in this phone”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He has a personal message for you\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A command appears on the screen: read message?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What on earth\u2026. You touch \u201cyes\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A message pops up. No longer than a tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then it\u2019s over. You look at the almost mirror-image of yourself, transfixed. The likeness is uncanny. It\u2019s\u2026it\u2019s amazing. You\u2019ll have to google it. What was it called again? \u201cFind your doppelganger\u201d. There must be a forum or something with other people who have \u2026 f***ing hell!.. tried it out too. You don\u2019t know who this \u201cFred\u201d is, staring at you, but the hairs on your arms are standing on end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you\u2019ve just missed your train.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
