Now partly available <a href=\"https:\/\/apple-cf.com.theyesmen.org\/\">here<\/a>. <br><br>Culture-jammers the Yes Men create a spoof &#8216;Apple&#8217; website to launch a new iPhone whose ingredients are &#8216;conflict free&#8217;. They announce that you can upgrade your iPhone 4 to the conflict-free version free of charge. Working with students from the Parsons School in New York, they dress up as Apple staff outside a store and hand out leaflets that encourage shoppers to go inside and upgrade their iPhone to a conflict-free one, at no charge. This is such a brilliant idea, especially with all the recent news stories about a civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where regular iPhones&#8217; rare earth &#8216;conflict minerals&#8217; may have been sourced. For many, Apple is taking the lead in this highly competitive and fast moving sector. Which it loves to shout about. It&#8217;s acting to remove conflict minerals in its supply chains, and inviting its shoppers to come on board as ethical consumers. When the shoppers take their leaflets into the store and are refused their free upgrade&#8230; When they realise that a &#8216;conflict free iPhone&#8217; does not exist&#8230; When the Apple Store staff, many of whom were pleasantly surprised that Apple was doing this, realise that some of the people who look like their colleagues may be activists causing trouble&#8230; When the police are called in&#8230; When the story gets into the press (the whole idea) and Apple is forced to quickly publish a press release denying that a conflict-free iPhone exists&#8230; When the Yes Men quickly release a fake Apple press release that explains what the company is (not) doing to remove conflict minerals from its supply chains&#8230; When Apple forces the web host for The Yes Men&#8217;s fake iPhone 4CF website to take it down within hours&#8230; &#8230; the knowledge that Apple&#8217;s iPhones contain &#8216;conflict minerals&#8217; becomes an international news story. It helps that the Yes Men are highly experienced corporate impersonators (they call this &#8216;identity correction&#8217;). It helps that the carefully planned and often hilarious unravelling of the lies the Yes Men tell are a magnet for business journalists who often don&#8217;t have many fun stories to report. And it helps that this is a positive critique: it&#8217;s perfectly possible that Apple could produce a conflict-free iPhone if it put its mind to it. This isn&#8217;t a negative, anti-capitalist critique of Apple &#8211; although the company seems to respond as if it is &#8211; it&#8217;s a good idea. The Yes Men have shown what it looks like. How Apple could market it. That shoppers would trade their only iPhones for a conflict-free upgrade. To be perfectly clear, this product does not exist, and Apple has no connection to the group that promoted it. Furthermore, although Apple does have plans to certify its materials as conflict-free, this will by no means be any sort of solution to the situation of conflict in the Congo, nor in any way help bring an end to that conflict. Rather, the solution must be based in diplomacy. In this regard, there is a law on the books \u2013 the \u2018Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act,\u2019 Public Law 109-456, introduced by then-Senator Obama in 2005 \u2013 that demands, among other things, the appointment of a special envoy to the Great Lakes region. As of now, four years later, this has still not happened, and the Congolese continue to die by the tens of thousands. There are various possible solutions to this problem, but it is up to you, not Apple, to accomplish them. Here are some things you can do: Report the violation of Public Law 109-456 to the FBI. Visit tips.fbi.gov to do so, or call 1-800-CALLFBI (225-5324). Culpable parties involve not only the President and the White House, but the Secretary of State, who is in charge of enforcing that portion of this law that demands the withholding of aid to destabilizing nations. You might consider performing a citizen\u2019s arrest against the above parties. Any citizen can arrest someone committing a crime, if the crime is sufficiently grave. Millions of deaths in the Congo are, Apple believes, a very grave crime. You might also consider performing a citizen\u2019s arrest against shareholders and officers of the mining companies that have been implicated in pillaging the resources of the Congo and fueling the conflict in the Congo over the past 14 years. Why not start with John Paulson, the majority shareholder of AngloGold Ashanti, the mining company most responsible for financially supporting rebel groups and furthering the Congo conflict. Their focus of critique was Apple\u2019s effort to represent itself and its customers as especially socially responsible. Additionally they wanted to inform consumers that political problems could not only be solved by corporations or by consumer buying habits but by political means &#8230; The students created a fake product &#8230; that served as a vehicle for all the information that they had unearthed during their work &#8230; Using the aesthetics and stylistics of Apple, their campaign was made to mirror the company and their consumers that they were subverting. The iPhone 4cf (2010), for example, is a \u2018conflict free\u2019 smartphone advertised on a spoof website &#8211; www.apple-cf.com &#8211; where consumers were encouraged to download, print out and take to their local Apple store a form that would allow them upgrade their iPhone to a non-existent \u2018cf\u2019 version without charge (Parkin 2011, np). <a href=\"https:\/\/follow-the-things.onyx-sites.io\/?p=7681\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7681\">Phone Story<\/a> (2011) is a smartphone game in which, to get through one level for example, \u2018while the narrator explains that most electronic devices require the mining of coltan, a conflict mineral in Congo whose demand spurs war and child labour, the player must use the touch screen to guide armed soldiers to bark at exhausted child miners in order to meet the goal in time\u2019 (Alexander in Kemppainen et al 2012, np). And the \u2018real\u2019 Fairphone (2013) has been made and marketed to \u2018create a fairer smartphone economy by building a phone\u2019 whose \u2018raw materials come from conflict-free mines, \u2026 [whose] manufacturers are paid a living wage, and \u2026 [whose] open source operating system \u2026 anyone can modify\u2019 (Salek 2013, np). As the Yes Men&#8217;s fake press release notes, \u2018although Apple does have plans to certify its materials as conflict-free, this will by no means be any sort of solution to the situation of conflict in the Congo, nor in any way help bring an end to that conflict. It wasn\u2019t a direct attack on Apple, but I would guess they performed it at Apple since it is one of the most popular electronic manufactures in the world.
